Although exercise and a healthy diet will undoubtedly be good for you, it is advisable to speak to your doctor before starting an exercise routine, as you tend to be more at risk of injuring yourself if you are already obese or overweight. It is very important that any changes in your diet or activity level should be gradual so that it will eventually become part of your daily routine.

Losing weight
with only dieting and exercise can seem like an impossible challenge. That is why there are certain obesity treatments that can help to boost the effectiveness of your weight loss efforts.

What prescription treatments are there for obesity?
Most obesity treatments work by suppressing your appetite. They act on receptors in the brain, to produce impulses that make you feel more satisfied after consuming less food. Because you are less inclined to eat, it will be much easier for you lose weight while dieting and exercising. Two appetite suppressant medications, Acomplia and Reductil, were both previously available for obesity treatment, however, both are currently suspended from sale due to health concerns and are pending further review.

There are a new generation of appetite suppressant medications which are currently being trialled in America by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). Out of the medications being tested, Contrave has proved to be the most promising. Contrave combines two existing medications, naltrexone and bupropion. Bupropion suppresses the appetite and increase the body’s metabolism, while naltrexone affects how the body processes the taste of sweet foods, so they are less desirable. Two other medications, Qnexa and Lorcaserin have also been tested, but they did not pass phase three of the FDA’s test procedure.
